According to a new study, using an electric toothbrush could help to improve your oral health much more than a manual brush, as it reduces the risk of common problems like tooth loss.
The ground-breaking study, which lasted for just over a decade, investigated the relationship between electric toothbrushes and periodontitis, a common gum disease caused by bacteria.
Around 2800 adults were tested and those who used electric toothbrushes experienced 20% less tooth loss than manual toothbrush users, as they had healthier gums and less tooth decay.
Dr Nigel Carter OBE, who is CEO of the Oral Health Foundation, has stated that several health experts have been championing the use of electric toothbrushes for many years.
Yet, only 49% of British adults are currently using an electric toothbrush as part of their daily oral care routine.
The main reason behind this is that the majority of adults are put off by the price of electric toothbrushes, which cost significantly more than manual toothbrushes.
However, Dr Carter has stressed that electric toothbrushes are a great investment, as they can play a crucial role in improving your oral hygiene.
So, we know science has proven that electric toothbrushes are better for our oral health, but what are the reasons behind this?
Here are the main benefits of using electric toothbrushes as an answer to some of your oral care woes…
Better Plaque Removal
Firstly, electric toothbrushes, especially those with oscillating heads, are much more effective at removing plaque from your teeth.
Additionally, this also means that they reduce the risk of gingivitis by a considerable amount.
This is because the vibration creates more micro-movements in the mouth, which unsettles and removes the plaque at a better rate than a manual brush.
Ease of Use
Secondly, electric toothbrushes are much easier to use than manual brushes, as they provide the cleaning action for you.
All that you are required to do is simply guide the brush around your mouth, which means that they are a great option for people who have reduced mobility.
Healthier Gums
Lastly, using an electric toothbrush can also result in healthier gums, as most modern brushes now include technology to help you protect your mouth.
Technology features like pressure sensors, timers and different brushing modes can play a pivotal role in protecting sensitive teeth and gums.
On the whole, it is safe to say that electric toothbrushes are much better for your oral health than manual brushes, despite the difference in price.
However, as Dr Carter suggests, whether you are currently using an electric toothbrush or not, it is vital that you’re following a good oral health routine.
