The theme for World Oral Health Day 2026 is “A Happy Mouth is a Happy Life”, a statement we have always found to be true! Good oral health doesn’t just give you bright teeth and a fresh smile; it prevents tooth loss, reduces the risk of oral diseases, and protects your overall health across an entire lifetime.
This year, World Oral Health Day aims to raise awareness of the importance of oral health at every stage of life, from your first milk teeth through to your implants or dentures. Caring for your teeth, gums, and smile is a lifelong commitment, and we are here to help, so get ready to smile on March 20th with our guide to good oral health.
Why Good Oral Health Matters
Let’s think about the role that teeth play in our day-to-day life. We all know that we use them to smile wide, but your ability to bite, chew, and speak is all thanks to your teeth as well. Healthy teeth also contribute to your overall appearance, as they support your cheeks, lips, and jawline and help to maintain your facial structure. Without them you may experience a change in appearance, and a severe knock to your self-confidence, but oral health involves so much more than just your teeth.
The mouth is an entryway into the body, and there is a scientifically-proven connection between oral health and general health. Bacteria can easily enter the bloodstream via damaged gums or abscesses, and alongside bad breath, gum disease, and tooth decay, oral issues also raise the risk of:
● Heart disease
● Cardiovascular diseases
● Respiratory diseases
● Cancer
● Diabetes
And more. If you do not prioritise your dental health then your overall health is put at risk - so, protect your whole body this World Oral Health Day with our top tips.
Tips for Good Oral Health
Here’s how you can protect your teeth, gums, and mouth every day, at every age.
1. Brush Your Teeth
This may sound obvious - after all, being told to brush twice daily is our first oral health education as children. Yet despite this, the habit doesn’t seem to stick, and many UK adults are consistently forgetting to brush their teeth.
As many as 20% brush their teeth only once per day, so don’t become part of this statistic. Give them a thorough brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste for the best results, and keep an eye out for early signs of decay or gum disease.
2. Floss Regularly
It’s also well worth taking the time to use mouthwash and floss when brushing your teeth (despite only 37% of people using mouthwash, and 30% using dental floss, on a regular basis!).
Both of these additional measures remove excess plaque and bacteria from the mouth that normal brushing may have missed. Interspace brushes are also very helpful for cleaning those hard-to-reach areas, if you’re not already one of only 21% of UK adults who use them!
3. Feed Your Smile
It’s important to nourish your teeth, just as you nourish your bone, gut, and heart health. These foods are rich in vitamins and minerals that will support long-term oral health, so make the right choice with:
● Dairy products for calcium.
● Leafy greens for folic acid.
● Fruit and vegetables for fibre.
● And lean proteins for Vitamin D.
4. Stay Hydrated
Brushing your teeth will get rid of the harmful acids left behind by eating, but there will be less to brush away if you choose healthier alternatives to sugary snacks and drink water throughout the day.
Prioritising hydration, especially after eating, will rinse away lingering food particles and neutralise the acids present in sugary or processed foods. Drinking enough water will also stimulate saliva production, which supports long-term oral health.
5. Visit The Dentist
The NHS recommends that those with good oral health have a check-up every year, whilst those with dental problems may need to be seen on a more regular basis. At Riverside Dental Spa, we will monitor your teeth, gums, and mouth, and provide you with tailored recommendations to keep you smiling for years to come.
Ongoing visits will allow us to identify any problems before they develop, and to treat them in good time, so avoid the untreated pain and potential risks that come with poor oral health by booking your next appointment here.
